Ethics and Social Media in the Public Service

Ottawa | February 10, 2012

As the use of social media increases, a growing number of organizations are trying to figure out what constitutes acceptable behaviour in this area. The Treasury Board Secretariat is providing guidance to public servants on a number of situations where the rights of the individual may compete with values such as duty and loyalty. This one-day conference, hosted by the Office of the Chief Human Resources Officer and the Canada School of Public Service, will explore the world of social media, its impact on public servants and the guidelines that they can adopt to reconcile their personal preferences with workplace values and ethical decision-making.

Objectives:

  • Raise awareness about values and ethics challenges posed by using social media in the public service, and identify best practices in this area.
  • Learn about social media guidance documents available to public service employees that offer potential solutions to ethical challenges.
  • Promote the networking and exchange of best practices concerning the relationships between values and ethics and the use of social media.
