Success in collaboration – A leadership development initiative designed for public servants in Manitoba
On March 15, 2013, 48 future managers from across the public service received a diploma marking their completion of the Manitoba Interdepartmental Leadership Development Initiative (MILDI). MILDI was developed by the School in collaboration with the Manitoba Federal Council in direct response to departments' need for more affordable and accessible leadership development.
Modeled after the School's ileadership program, MILDI offered 12 days of learning over 12 months: a five-day in-class session followed by a series of events, panel discussions and additional classroom sessions on values and ethics, strategic thinking, engagement and management excellence.
This initiative provided organizations with an opportunity to develop and enhance the key leadership competencies of their aspiring leaders. It was designed to help public servants at the EX minus 2 to 4 levels meet their career development needs, acquire and enhance key leadership competencies and develop a network of peers and mentors.
Managers reported that their employees returned to the workplace with renewed energy and stronger engagement as a result of their participation. 70 percent of participants also increased their score on the 840 Middle Management Situational Exercise by an average of 17 points after completing MILDI.
The Alberta Federal Council has expressed interest in partnering with the School to deliver a similar initiative in Alberta. The School also plans to present the initiative to the Saskatchewan Federal Council at the Council's October 2013 meeting.
