Orientation for Directors General (E550)

By properly understanding their distinct role, newly appointed directors general are better positioned to succeed as senior leaders. This orientation course leverages the collective strengths of the DG community and the support of other senior leaders to help build personal strategies for navigating the evolving complexities of being a director general in the public service. Participants will learn how to enhance their decision making by drawing from the experience of their peers and the senior leaders and subject matter experts within their professional networks.

Topics include:

  • transitioning to the DG role
  • understanding DG-level accountabilities, scope and latitudes
  • managing key relationships and strategic resourcing
  • being an inclusive leader and leading in times of change


All participants must be a newly appointed DG within their first 18 months of appointment, or have more than 6 months experience acting in a DG role. Participants must also report directly to an ADM or DM to be eligible for registration. Anyone interested in registering for this course can contact to indicate their interest.


This course consists of six virtual modules to be completed over a three-week period. A time commitment of approximately 4 hours per week (2 hours per module) is required for a total of 12 hours.

  • Module 3: Managing key relationships
  • Module 4: Being an inclusive leader
  • Module 5: Strategic resourcing
  • Module 6: Leading in times of change

This course is intended to help new DGs better understand their role and what is expected of them at this level, including how to deliver results in complex and dynamic work environments. Participants will also benefit from opportunities to build new relationships and foster collaborative networks throughout the course.
