Understanding costing has become a requirement for financial officers and managers at all levels. This course reviews the established approaches to communicating cost information and challenging cost estimates. Participants will have an opportunity to put their costing skills into practice and improve their ability to analyze cost information based on the Treasury Board Secretariat's Guide to Cost Estimating.

Topics include:

  • identifying the seven steps to costing
  • preparing a cost estimate
  • communicating a cost estimate
  • reviewing and challenging a cost estimate


This intermediate-level course is designed for employees who conduct cost analyses and those who are involved in the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) attestation process.
