Notes:

This program is cohort-based and is comprised of three separate phases. Each phase must be completed to obtain a certificate of completion for the overall program.

A commitment of 36 hours plus 30 to 50 hours of self-directed project work is expected to complete all three phases of the program.

Program phases

Phase 1: Reflecting on Canada's colonial history

Instructor-led virtual course; 6 hours (2 sessions of 3 hours each)

Public service leaders are responsible for knowing their country's history and acknowledging how past and present decisions continue to impact Indigenous populations. This course for executives provides an overview of the key events that make up Crown-Indigenous relationships that have had a negative impact on Indigenous populations. Participants will review the recommendations of several important reports that propose concrete ways to make amends and overcome mistakes from the past.

Phase 2: Building meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples

In-person classroom course; 30 hours (7.5 hours in each of 4 consecutive days), Ottawa

This four-day in-person course brings executives together for an immersive learning experience where they will engage directly with Indigenous leaders, Elders, and community members, including through a one-day onsite cultural experience. Participants will focus on relationship-building, expanding their cultural competency, and understanding Indigenous perspectives on leadership, governance, and reconciliation.

This course is exclusive to program participants. Phase 2 typically begins about a month after the completion of Phase 1.

Phase 3: Reconciliation project implementation

Self-directed project work (individual or in a group); 30 to 50 hours (based on scope of project) over 12 months

Over a 12-month period, executives will develop and implement a reconciliation-focused initiative within their organization. Participants will apply their learning to a tangible project that drives systemic change and will then share their lessons learned, challenges, insights and outcomes in a group setting.

Phase 3 will begin immediately after the completion of Phase 2.

Schedule

Three cohorts are usually scheduled per year: spring, fall, and winter. Each cohort consists of 15 to 18 participants.
