Mission and mandate
The GC Data Community seeks to connect, engage, and serve the growing number of data practitioners, enablers and learners across the Government of Canada to improve policies, programs and service delivery to Canadians.
The GC Data Community provides support in five main areas:
- Connecting data leaders and practitioners from all levels across departments and agencies
- Advancing data-related learning and professional development opportunities
- Promoting innovation and uptake of tools and applications that leverage data
- Supporting the adoption of common data standards and governance practices
- Co-hosting the annual GC Data Conference

GC Data Conference and other learning events
GC Data Conference
The annual GC Data Conference is the primary forum for public servants and data leaders to increase awareness, share knowledge and advance data applications across the Government of Canada.
The conference has grown to attract over 9,000 registered participants and features global and Canadian experts and thought leaders.
This event is delivered by the Canada School of Public Service, with the subject-matter support and expertise of the GC Data Community and a rotating co-host department or agency.

IM Backstage Pass
Organized in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada, this annual event offers participants behind-the-scenes access to the latest trends in information management across the Government of Canada, including new technologies, and valuable insights from subject matter experts. Data Resources Hub
The Data Resources Hub provides data-related toolkits and learning resources for public servants across the Government of Canada. These resources are intended to empower employees by providing guidance on the use of data-related tools and upskilling opportunities (links exclusive to public servants).

GC Data Competency Framework
Building data literacy requires common definitions and understanding of the competencies needed for public servants to work together in treating data as an enterprise asset. The Government of Canada Data Competency Framework provides a model to guide data literacy efforts, which involve all federal public servants working with and using data.
GC Data Maturity Assessment Tool
The GC Data Community is developing a tool to support departments and agencies in defining and measuring their organizational data maturity levels. This tool will allow organizations to benchmark progress, compare results across the Government of Canada, and define foundational elements for AI readiness. Explore the tool on the GC Data Community GCXchange (only available to public servants).
GC Data Stories
At each GC Data Conference, GC Data Community partner departments and agencies have the opportunity to showcase videos of current data use cases from their organization. Visit the GC Data Conference pages on GCXchange.to browse through the catalogue of videos.
Group Discussions
Following the success of the Group Discussions pilot initiative at the GC Data Conference 2025, the GC Data Community now provides opportunities for our partners and the public service to engage, network and ask questions directly to expert data practitioners in small group discussions.
