Orientation for Directors General Program

Description

Transitioning into the role of director general (DG) brings with it a broader scope of responsibilities and expectations, which can be challenging to navigate without the right guidance and support. The Orientation for Directors General Program is designed to help new directors general leverage the collective strengths of the DG community to enhance their decision-making and ability to deliver results. By drawing from the experience of their peers and professional networks, participants will learn how to more effectively navigate the evolving complexities of being a director general in the federal public service.

About the program

The Orientation for Directors General Program provides an opportunity for senior leaders to better understand their distinct role and what is expected of them at the DG level. The program draws upon the expertise of other senior leaders and subject-matter experts with real-world experience to assist participants in developing and applying the leadership competencies needed to meet the evolving demands placed on public service executives.

This bilingual in-person program is delivered over 3 consecutive days: 2 full (7.5-hour) days and 1 half (4-hour) day, for a total time commitment of 19 hours.

Eligibility

This program is specifically designed for the director general level (typically EX-02 or EX-03). If you are a new or acting EX-01, please visit the New Directors Program.

To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:

Effective October 1, 2025, holding a valid authority delegation certificate is a prerequisite for participants of the Orientation for Directors General Program working in the core public administration (departments and agencies listed in schedules I and IV of the Financial Administration Act).

Schedule

Program cohorts are currently being scheduled in fall 2025, winter 2026, and spring 2026. Each cohort consists of 36 participants.
